New Rondo User and Implant Patient

Hello All!

I am new to the community.  I had the cochlear implant done back on January 7th of this year.  February 12th was Activation Day for me.  The Rondo is my primary processor.  I am hearing out of my ear that I was born deaf in. :-)  I am still in the early stages, so folks still sound distant, but voices are no longer always sounding robotic. :-)

Hi Donna

I hope that all is going well for you  and your new CI. Could you provide a quick overview of the CI rehab process and what that entails/duration. A quick bit about me I have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Had my first in the hear hearing aid at about 8 years of age, only started wearing BTE occasionally in both ears during high school years. Currently wear Phonak Naida S III SP BTE in both ears. Hearing has deteriorated significantly over the last few years and I am a candidate for cochlear implant surgery, I will probably have a CI by the end of the year- I am curious to know about the rehab process and how long it takes to reach its full potential. I am leaning towards the RONDO Medel or Cochlear. If you could share your experience in more detail that would be much appreciated.

regards,

Hello!  I am new to the forum and have a question about the ability of the RONDO to stay on the head.  I had my implant on April 28, 2015 and as of today, June 22 I cannot get the RONDO to stay on my head comfortably.  I have the Level 4 magnet which is suppose to be the strongest (however it is my information that there is one stronger but needs to be special ordered).  I have not experienced any itching from the Level 4 magnet (something I read would probably happen with the stronger magnet).  I chose the RONDO for two reasons:  1.  the electron probe was the longest available and would allow for the maximum frequency levels and  2.  I would not have the appliance on the back of my ear.  Now, I feel I cannot wear the RONDO because I cannot make it stay on my head.

Hi,

I have a Rondo as well. Mine stays on with magnet 3 but I have read posts from others who have difficulty keeping it on even with magnet 4. I have not heard of a magnet 5. Are you wearing the Rondo over your hair or tucked under your hair?

I tuck it under my hair.  I even asked if it would be better to shave the area where the magnet is.  No, was the answer because the the bristles of hair prevent closeness.

I'm sorry you are having trouble getting the Rondo to stay in place. Are you going to try the special order magnet you mentioned?

Have an appointment to update my mapping on June 23rd.  I will be asking my audiologist if she will special order the Level 5 magnet.  If I don't need it later down the line that is great but I selected the RONDO for specific reasons.  I researched a great deal before my surgery and was also thinking about the Nucleus 6 because it seemed to have some great features.  Was not even interested in Med El products until I started reading about them.

Honest

Y, I can't remember off the top of my head which magnet I have. I originally thought that I would get a 1or 2 ( for opus 2) because I keep the sides and back of my head shaved. That was not the case. I was more middle of the road. Every person is different.

MontanaBabe,

Not sure if this is the problem, but does your RONDO magnets have circles or triangles on them?

I couldn't get my RONDO to stay on either and eventually discovered that I had been given the wrong mangets. The RONDO device is the same, but the magnets required for the latest Synchrony implant has triangles instead of circles to denote the magnet level. Apparently it had something to do with the way the magnet in the implant moves to achieve the 3T MRI which meant the magnets in the RONDO had to change also.

That is very interesting.

That makes sense about a different magnet, never even thought of it.

Yes folks but you haven't reach the other aspect - the thickness of your skin. The strength of the magnet depends on that fact: people who have more thick skin needs stronger magnet.

MontanaBabe - try the strongest magnet especially if your skin does not react to magnet nr. 4. If this won't be enough, further steps can be made - for instance, your skin layer can be surgically be pealed so you got thinner skin and better device attachment. ;)

Hi Caline,

For me both the Opus 2 and the Rondo sound the same. It's just a matter of preference. The new Sonnet has some features that are not in the Opus 2 or Rondo.

We are still waiting for FDA approval on certain things like the wind noise reduction and the 2nd mic.

We are also waiting on the rechargeable batteries and charger to be approved. From what I understand, there is not supposed to be any difference in sound quality because you use the same programs.

I want to thank all of you for your time and willingness to help all concerned with the CI process.

I'm getting close to selection and implant procedure and was wondering if anybody has been able to compare the effectiveness of the Rondo compared to other processors.  I have been wearing hearing aids for a number of years and would like to get rid of everything behind my ears eventually.

Hal,

Many people prefer the Rondo. Right now the newest tech is in the Sonnet BTE processor. I am fortunate to have both and enjoy them. For me, things sound better in the Sonnet but you can't beat the ease of the Rondo, especially when sweating.

I have had ha's for twenty years now. I never feel them. I also recently got a CI. I have a sonnet The battery pack is quite a bit bigger that your standard BTE so it is a bit heavier and took some getting used to. But I love my sonnet. I chose sonnet as it had the latest technology. I didn't want to be stuck with older technology for 6-7 years as things advance very quickly. These devices are very costly as well that was another reason to get the latest technology. But I like the idea of rondo, but was worried it would fall off. As it has no place to rest on. That's a personal point.

RONDO magnets, I use the number 4 magnet and since activation date 4/23/16 for the reason it did not want to stay on, as of now after 7 Weeks it has improved 50% But While Golfing, Hunting & Shooting competitions I ware a hat which keeps the unit in place. Another thing I started using in evening hours is to ware a flex head band that forces the rondo closer to the head which I believe is making a difference. My surgeon said they could reduce the thickness of my skin area in that area but would not consider that option until at least 6 months after surgery. Also I am not aware of a number 5 magnet and have not been informed of that being available for consideration. I was loaned the behind the ear unit at activation for 5 weeks and gave it back for two reasons 1) The Rondo understands better 2) It was way to heavy and very uncomfortable for me and yes I have had hearing aids for the last 25 years but the weight & size for me to accept. The Rondo I don't feel it at all unless I become very active and forget to put a hat on. Just another user telling all my short experiences with my MedEL product. Thank you

Hi,

have you heard for the Sportsband which can help to keep your Rondo at the right place. A real purpose is to use it during sport activities but it can be helpful in this way also.

Hi, I had the same problem with my Rondo initially so had the magnet replaced.i had my implant March 8 and the specialist explained that there can be a lot of swelling and scar tissue after the operation and the magnet may need to be stronger initially to cater for that. 2 months down the track the swelling has definitely gone down.
