Kara of Canada reacted to Carolyn in New User with questions and concerns
Hi All, thank you for your responses.  I saw my audi  who made some minor adjustments and a new map. I didn't notice much  difference, but truthfully, the whole experience is getting better with time.   As my  audiologist tells, me "words, like music, are  all on pitches. You brain just has to figure it out." I am also wearing my hearing aid in the non-implanted ear now.  That hearing aid doesn't really assist with speech  discrimination,  but it normalizes everything.  Overall, my quality of life is soooo much better. Thanks again for responding!

Hey guys! I am new, although I was registered with the old hearpears forum but to be truthful, I have not signed onto that account in so long, haha. Anyways, I live in Louisville, Kentucky and I am a bilateral implant user!

Hope to make friends on here!

    Thank you!

@sassychele02 I'm glad to hear you're OK!  It's a nuisance to have to move your activation, but much much better to be safe.
@Daniel the Stranger!  Your second surgery is two days before mine and your activation one day earlier!  This is going to be great!
It's nice to see you all again (so to speak) - we were off the grid and way up north in the woods.

I have a friend with Advanced Bionics and she has a Roger pen too, but did not receive it with her processor - she's in New Brunswick and just got the processor.  But her employer bought it for her, which I think is pretty cool.

Emily C, I quickly got bored with Angel Sounds and such and would only use it occasionally. I joined the local library and downloaded audiobooks and the corresponding e-book and read along while listening to the audiobook via the Artone neck loop.
I would go to a noisy coffee shop, and at first would put the Sonnet on Telecoil and barely be able to follow along reading the book. The narrator was robotic, I didn’t even realize for the longest time they would switch male/female if the dialogue demanded?  If I lost my place reading along I was completely lost. I’m talking a month activated or so.
I gradually progressed to where I was was following along easily, voices sounded more normal, hearing and understanding whole paragraphs at times! I got to the point where I would switch to MT and try to read through the noise of the coffee shop. It’s still a real challenge but I find good practise. You’ll be surprised how quickly you start to pick things up, I laugh now at how befuddled I was and continue to be at sounds I had no chance of hearing before. It’s quite an experience and it will only get more amazing.

@Emily C.  Hearing about everyone’s unique journeys is fascinating!  I can’t wait to follow the posts.

@Jewel  Safe travels.  I hoped to hear 12 beeps during activation and was hopeful they would all sound different from each other.  Smile.  Just remember that whatever happens at activation, it is merely your starting point.  It in no way indicates how well you will do with your CI over time and training.  Be prepared to see lots of small red boxes!

Wow. I don’t buy that one. Well all it is is purified salt water. Since you live in Jamaica you might be able to find it there. Then a small netti pot would do the job.
  16. Thanks

@Jewel in reference to a netti pot I use hydrasense. Same kind of thing. SPprays a small stream of saline up your nose. I love the stuff. Also at the pharmacy. Not sure of in the states. I’ll google it for you.

Daily I use my Sonnets but no additional tech other than listening to music etc through my phone or iPad. Sometimes if there’s lots of people around I can use my neckloop and block everyone out! Sound quality is amazing. I have the Quattro 4  Neck loop

Wow @DarlaHS kudos to you! I wish I could have done both at once. It is quite overwhelming at first after activation for me anyway. I heard all kinds of sounds right away and everything was too loud! But it definitely gets better and I have not regrets going bilateral! I was shaved just as much as you were. Mine is finally growing back. On the new side it’s about four inches long now. Takes time! Best of luck with activation! It’s when the wild ride begins and the hard work too!

@Mary Featherston it’s diffrent for everyone. My first I was on bed rest for two weeks then no lifting or blowing my nose or sneezing or coughing if could be avoided for 6 weeks from there.

Kara of Canada got a reaction from Mary Beth in Sonnets....rechargeable or disposable batteries?
I didn’t really notice a difference with either. Except with the rechargeables the sound quality dips right before they start beeping to be changed. That’s about it.

Hi welcome to Hear peers!! You have definitely come to the right place. I am also an amateur musician. Well I used to be more of a novice but not now. Well as your medical situation is unique to you we all have this! For me I couldn't go without being able to hear my kids. I couldn't hear my organ or guitar at all anymore. I made the decision to be implanted as well. After just three weeks I was able to hear my organ again!! I bawled my eyes out!! It's not perfect yet but I will get there. If it's possible for you. Go for two implants the sound quality is far more clear and concise. I have one implant now and one hearing aid. My implant is doing way better than my happening aided ear!! Others will tell you the same thing. Others will tell you about the different types of implants as well. I wish you all the best in your journey. Yes it's hard work with the rehab training but us worth every minute!!!
