@Mary Beth¬†and something that will be forever burned in your brain ūü§£ The surgeries I had a a kid, they gave me medicine to make me sleepy and wheeled me into the operating room where I fell asleep very soon after.

@Elbras best wishes and good luck!

Welcome back!  Exciting about your second CI.  Which processor are you choosing?

    Hello Penelope's Mom,
I have been wearing the Sonet processor for 1 week and I am very happy with it. Of the three companies,
    I chose Med-el for these reasons :
    1) Atraumatic electrodes - since I had some hair cells in the low frequencies that were not totally damaged and I wanted to keep those hair cells
    2) 24 electrodes providing a wide dynamic range -
    3) Magnet can withstand 3.0 tesla strength - this helps if your child should ever need an MRI, this can be done without surgery to remove the implant first. Also, strong enough that I can play Pickleball without the magnet falling off.
    4) I was very pleased with how smooth and sleek the processor looks and feels. Aesthetically I did not care, but I was expecting a bulky processor and magnet and to my surprise that was not the case.
Do your research and best of luck to you and your child. Elaine

    Nikki,
I received a CI. At this writing, I received 2 mappings (early stages). I train every day and I have seen improvement, but I will get to a certain level that I cannot pass, so I must practice at another level or train with another application. This group recommended AB Clix software which was easier than the higher levels of Angel Sound. Later on, I went back to Angel Sounds and passed the harder level. I think this is where the 3P's come in!

Yes, we have a great group here! Ivana helped me with my eye infection I received after my surgery. If it wasn't for her advice, who knows how long I would've had that infection. Thanks again!

    Cara,
One option to train only your CI ear is to use the Quattro4 neckloop with a Bluetooth connection to your sound source and out your CI in T setting. Then ONLY the CI will get the signal.

    Hi Marjorie,
    Welcome to Hear Peers.
I am in my 60's and I was implanted with a CI in 12/2015. I thought the same thing! I now realized that I made the right decision. Yes, it takes patience and perseverance but I am looking forward to a better quality of life!
    Best wishes.

    hi Nikki,
    Welcome to Hear Peers.
I got implanted 12/22/15. I needed a week to feel normal.
The first week after surgery can be a little rough, so rest up. Glad the surgery went well for you. Activation day will be here soon!

Elbras got a reaction from Ivana Marinac in Bloomberg - CI hearing implant journey
    Hi folks,
I had mixed feelings about the article, so I emailed the Author.
She said the Bloomberg article was written 5 years ago before she wrote her 1st book on her CI experience. She mentioned why she did not do her training for three months, as she had lost her job the same time and she had been deaf for 30 years before implantation. She did rehab and training afterwards, and still had some difficulty. Her Audiologist explained that being deaf with no stimulus for 30 years would present some challenges for her. She has written a second book with more positive attitudes toward CI.

Elbras got a reaction from Cara Mia in Expectations from 2nd Mapping
I've been driving for many, many years. I never thought the car was that noisy. So noisy, that after my 2nd mapping yesterday, 2/15, I could not hear my husband very well while he was driving.
Now I left the Audiologist's office 10 minutes before feeling wonderful because I could hear better than I have been the past month when I was Mapped for the first time. We get into the car and onto the noisy, city streets and I am totally bewildered. So I think to myself, "food will help!" Food can be somewhat comforting when in a bewildered state. My husband and I go to a deli and it had to be the noisiest restaurant in South Carolina! "What's that noise in the background," I asked? "Rap music," says my husband. Oh my!
We start our 2 hour journey home, and my husband's voice sounds "garbled." I remembered his voice sounding garbled the 1st time I was mapped, but just to be sure, I rushed an email to my Audiologist and explain. She told me that I was hearing these sounds better but the noise will likely distract me when listening to speech. My brain needs to adjust to the new mapping.
Well, 24 hours later, I am doing so much better with my new mapping that I got 95% of the fruits correct without lip reading!!
    I am a happy woman!

    Great advice above. Thanks folks!
A neighbor came in to visit with me. I tried to converse with her with just the CI. It took me about 10 mins to get use to her voice, but then I could follow her as time went along. Eventually, I got tired so I put my hearing aid in my right ear.
It certainly helps when you have people supporting you in this and are willing to be patient with you.
