GraniPeggy reacted to Mary Beth in Guide for a music rehabilitation: step by step.
My first CI (right) didn't really take to music until month 3 or 4. My second CI (left) loved music by week 4.
I listened to familiar music and just enjoyed whatever I could get from it. Great percussion, more and more instruments, a phrase here and there, etc. I approached music as something I would have to train. I listen to music often. I listened whether it sounded good or bad. I exposed my brain to the way music sounds through my CIs and let my brain figure it out.
Now I can learn new lyrics just by listening to new songs. I am also finding out that some lyrics I thought I knew are incorrect!
I attend musical shows and in fact will be attending a concert tomorrow.
    Exposure, patience and plasticity! Smile
    I love music.

JDashiel,I'm sorry so slow replying. My activation was Feb.6th and it went great! I was hearing immediately, with some distortion, voices at first sounded like Donald duck! Lol Within an hour, while discussing everything with the audioligist, the distortion cleared up and voices still sound normal about 98% of the time.In a crowd setting,in public places, there was still some, depending on the direction of the sound.I am unilateral CI..the other ear was not a candidate.BUT,later on I'm hoping the surgeon will be willing to attempt the other ear,or possibly a different type of procedure,I'm even game for clinical trials.

Hi to both Mary& Mary Beth, sorry l haven't responded sooner the tummy pain problem was pretty persistant ! I have now finished both the prednisone and the cleocin.,thankfully! I hit upon never taking the two at the same time;and also taking each one with very cold cottage cheese with soft canned fruit, such as pears or peaches, making sure my stomach was relatively full. That helped a LOT. Plus,l ate freq, small snacks so that my stomach never got empty enough to get very acidic.Im one of those people who meds can easily aggravate the stomach,so to avoid stomach pain,l took them at diff.times, hours apart. Thanks for your consideration,I got a little anxious at first,l admit.LOL ABSOLUTELY NO PAIN,from the implantation,NO nausea,no vertigo...so it was easier to handle this problem. Thanks again.

Hi Mary Beth, you asked me recently about what online sites my audiologist told me about to work on my listening here at home? These are on the list she gave me,that are free, but there were others that l can buy if ll choose to. 1)Soundscape,2)Angel Sound3)The Listening Room 4)Audio Concentration/Matching game 5) Randall`s ESL Cyber Listening Lab.
    1.www,medel.com/us/Soundscape
    2 angelsound.tigerspeech.com
    3thelisteningroom.com

    5 www.esl-lab.com
Also,l have a question: in some of the brochures l recieved,I saw that some folks clean the battery compartment with a q-tip dipped in alcohol? That wasn't mentioned at my activation visit.Should l be doing this? Thanks!

MaryFeatherston, it may be because he implanted on the side where l had a little residual hearing? Not much, but some, which was aided by a hearing aid.(The other ear is just completely stone deaf.) I went out to a restaurant today, and l did note that in a crowd situation, esp voices from behind me,  there was some change, some of that Donald duck quality was back.lol I'm wondering if the fact that l can only hear from one side has something to do with that. I know l have a long way to go yet,and need to get more practice with different sounds, but l agree that I'm really blessed! I went into activation petrified it wasn't going to work for Me!

Hi Monte,I definitely will keep in touch here and of course this group is great support for me and my zillion questions! I went out to a restaurant today,a flea market and a dept.store...those places reminded me that though I'm hearing very well considering l couldn't hear before, but I have work to do to reach my full potential.Im going to start some online programs tomorrow, and keep working for the best results l can achieve!

At first voices sounded a little like Donald duck, but during the visit voices became more normal.Im only 2 days out,and there are things to smooth out and to learn about my Sonnet. But I have to say,I'm on cloud 9 !!

Mary Beth,l apologize for not posting sooner..it's been kind of hectic! Lol The activation went fine and l was hearing as soon as it was turned on! Voices sounded like cartoon voices at first, but within the hour that smoothed out to more normal sounds.Im getting used to wearing the sonnet mic and coil, and working on things the audiologist talked to me about to help myself, such as online programs ...I'm so happy, this is a dream come true for me!

Hi Jewel,I apologize for being slow to update you guys! As you can imagine, since activation 2 days ago I've been in a whirl ! The activation went without a hitch..and l was hearing voices immediately! Hallellujah!! At first voices sounded cartoonish, but within the hour that smoothed out and voices were pretty much normal.Im on cloud 9,l never dreamed that I'd hear again, and certainly not this well! I even can hear music, and separate the voice from the instruments..although I'm not 100% understanding the lyrics. But l know it all takes time, and patience,I'm only 2 days past activation! I will be dropping in more, this forum is great support !

Hi Mary Beth,Mary&Jewel,Thanks for your replies! I did see Dr.Pillsbury yesterday( Monday) and my post-op exam was great. He wanted to get me activated right THEN, which is what l was hoping for!! However, audioligy was booked solid,so I have an appointment for Feb.8th activation...Can you guess that I'm beyond excited?! Lol  Dr.Pillsbury DID ok my going back to reg.use of my cpap starting last night.I was SO exhausted and sleep deprived that l went to bed last night at 7pm!! Slept well, woke up feeling great. I didn't have any problems that l could tell, other than the area behind the ear was still tender, when I first put on the head-piece,so I padded beneath the cpap head-piece with gauze.I REALLY need mine as l have mixed apnea, but hopefully if there's any future problem,Dr.Pillsbury and I can get it resolved.

Hi,I haven't had my CI yet,it's coming up this coming Tuesday,Jan.15th! I also chose Med el,for my unilateral implant.I chose it for the MRI capabilities,my love of music, and I liked the flexibility. Also,I like that the Med. El company is only about 60 miles from where I live.I will post later on,as l know more about things will work for me.
