Reading today some articles and found this one in the latest edition of O&N:

It is possible to predict the extent of the hearing preservation after the implantation:

I read about surgeons using this kind of monitoring to improve their surgical skills for preserving residual hearing. This monitoring does not help the present patient, in my understanding, but helps the surgeon learn.

Well, this team actually use a modification to help preserve as much as they can during the surgery. It would be extremely interesting to see more of their's results.

I think the fact that they are making a real effort to preserve is a great step forward. I think as we have talked about in the past, a lot with have to do with the individual as far as anatomy, skill of surgeon and a little luck. With Medels electrode arrays, I would say the recipient has a far better likelihood of preserving hearing.

Of course Adam, but we should never be contented with what we have made - further improvements just improve the situation. Parallel to technological advancements we should improve the operative techniques also - this is part of these efforts.

Exactly

I don't care what profession you are in. You should never be satisfied. Always look to improve.
