Interesting article about progress in technology of Cochlear Implants

I haven't heard of this before. I know a large part of preserving residual hearing is due to the skill of the surgeon and technique used in inserting the electrodes. Also the type of electrode array used. MEDEL is known for the design of their electrodes to be atraumatic to the cochlea , which means there is an excellent chance of preserving residual hearing.

i didn't really have any residual hearing left anyway so this didn't really matter to me from that standpoint. It did however factor in to my choosing MEDEL as they were really doing their homework in looking at every aspect of the implant and how to make it better for the patient. I'm not saying the other companies don't do that but MEDEL was the first to come out with this type of electrode.

I think the same as Adam. Although it is interesting work in trauma prevention or reduction. MEDEL with Concerto and Synchrony preserve residual udition

ok, science behind this is add-on up to the hearing preservation techniques.
This approach has sense - a lot, because it effects the implantation process at its prolonged phase - the phase of recovery and the response of body.
It would be great to read a whole article to see what made these scientists to look at this direction.

This is a very interesting article. I am bilateral EAS with residual in both ears. I have the flex24 array and had a very experienced surgeon using the soft insert technique. I remember him saying to me I had enough steroids in my head to float a boat. Steroids were used during my surgery but this new reasearch sounds pretty cool. I have lost some residual in my worst ear over the past 2 years although I still have enough to use the acoustic component of my processor.  I think it would be incredible to have the ability to regenerate new hair cells though.

Hi Maria, Rondo and Sonnet were developed on the different platform. If you check the technical characteristics of that devices you can see how they distinguish from each other .The Sonnet processor is a most advanced MED-EL product. It is a behind ear processor with T'Coil attached, Rondo is a single unit processor. Many people who use both of that processors find that both units can provide comfortable hearing. It is a matter of the personal preferences. The Sonnet processor comes with the Synchrony implant when Rondo can be used with the previous model of internal part.

Below is a picture of Rondo and Sonnet processors with the Synchrony implant.

Good like with your research!

I agree that this is a very interesting and promising research. I am sure that this new technique can reduce the dosage of steroids with the same benefits for hearing preservation compare to an oral administration. So, it can lead to the same (or even better) outcomes with the lesser adverse effects. And it is pretty easy to check for corticosteroid intolerance before surgery to make sure that this innovation will work with no problem after insertion.

I wish the hair cells regeneration were available now but... Still believe it will be accessible sooner than predicted. My bet is 10 vs 20-25 :)
