Second Ear Implant

Hi,

My son 3 years old got his first Implant surgery last November 2016. He is progressing slowly with his speech. We are struggling with him to wear the device all the time. Sometimes he removes it and resist to wear.

He was implanted with Medel Opus 2/Concerto. Now doctors are advising for him to go for second implant. We are bit worry for him to settle with his first device for some time and then we think of second one. I need to know what is the best option for him. Either we should go for it now and wait for our son to settle down with his first device and then go for the second one.

Overall his response is excellent with one device.

Thanks

Hello and welcome.  I wish the best for your son.

An important factor to consider is your son's age.  Our brains are the most flexible when we are very young and there are important language learning years.  If you plan on getting your son a second implant, implanting him soon would allow you to benefit from both his peak neuroplasticity as well as key language learning years.

In the end, it is a decision that only you can make.  You know your son the best.

I agree with Mary Beth 100%. The sooner you can implant, they should be able to develop speech much easier. Im not sure how old you child is.

I think hopefully talk to your audiologist about strategy to have him keep his processor on during the day. Also get your audiologists opinion on going for the second implant.

It is a very important decision that should not be taken lightly. It seems that he has progressed well with the implant. As he matures, he won't be so apt to want to pull it off.

all that said, it is YOUR decision on what to do. Whatever decision you make is the right one for you. Try not to let other people pressure you into moving forward with the implant.

You have to be 100% comfortable with the decision to move forward, if that is what you choose to do. Your help with his rehabs will be very important as well.

Let us know what you decide. Good luck

Thank you Mary Beth and Adam for your valuable feedback. really appreciated.

My son age is 3 years. We are still making our mind and will think on these points. We want to wait for some time to decide.
