Introducing myself

Janea

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Janea. I was implanted on January 9th, 2017 and activated February 3rd. I am a unilateral EAS user. I joined Hear Peers a few months ago but am just now learning about what a valuable resource it is. I am looking forward to reading through everything. I am also very happy to see @marybeth active here. Smile :) You were a tremendous help to me when I was starting this journey and throughout it. I just got a Phonak Naida hearing aid last week. I am adjusting to it. It is certainly different from the CI but similar in how things sounded initially with the CI. My HA Audi said that was normal and just like the CI cognitive connection, the HA has to wake up the other side of my brain. I am attending a Hands on Hearing event at the end of this month that will focus on streaming devices and options. I am looking forward to it as that is where my biggest questions are. With one side EAS CI and one side HA, I am not sure what I need to get that will work best with both. I would appreciate any suggestions, information or experiences anyone could share on this subject.

Thanks!!

Hi @Janea!  So glad things are progressing right along for you!  You will love Jeff Campagna's Hands On Hearing workshop.  Be sure that your HA audiologist has turned on the hearing aid telecoil before the workshop.  That way you will receive sound on both sides while testing out the looped room etc.  The Hands On Hearing website has a great resource about items to bring along to the workshop.

Let's see.....you have a Sonnet EAS and a Naida hearing aid.  Right?

I was able to use BOSE over the ear headphones with my HA without any feedback issues.  If you can too, the BOSE QC35 BlueTooth headphones are awesome!  Expensive but AWESOME.  Hands down the best sound I have experienced and I have tried lots of tech options.  Bass sounds in music are fantastic.  Very clear for phone use too.  20 hour battery life.  Very comfortable.

My favorite BlueTooth neckloop is the Artone 3 MAX.  I use it a lot for aural rehab training with my iPad, listening to podcasts, audiobooks, etc.

Did you receive a Roger receiver and Roger Pen with your Sonnet EAS?  If yes, you can purchase a Roger receiver from your HA audiologist for the Naida HA and get sound from the Roger Pen on both sides.  You could also just use a Roger MyLink neckloop with the Roger Pen and put your CI and HA in T or MT mode.  Make sure you test these options out at the Hands On Hearing workshop with Jeff.

Finding which tech, or no tech, works for you will take a little trial and error.  But you will figure out what works best for you in time.  There are so many options,

Yes @MaryBeth, a Sonnet EAS and a Naida. Unfortunately, I did not get a Roger Pen or receiver with my EAS kit. Those started being included about 3 months or so after I got my kit. I have the Quattro but I never use it. It has been out of the box 2, maybe 3 times. I just don't like it. I will check out the Artone 3 MAX. I am looking into the Bose QC35 headphones. My daughter works at Best Buy and can help me out with that.

I am definitely going to look for the what to bring article. The event sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun also as they are having the workshop, a cocktail party, and a dance! You can even wear costumes if you would like to. My husband and I are both going and I am excited about it. Hopefully I can learn much more about the Bluetooth options there. Both of my Audi's are communicating with each other about it, as well as the Pediatric CI Audi in the practice to help me determine what will work and what kind of cost will be associated. Wish I would have received the Roger instead of the Quattro. I will let you know how everything turns out. Thanks so much for your help!!

Sounds great @Janea.  As the Roger receivers (Roger X or Roger 21) do not give us access to 100/0 sound (only the sound source and not the room noise as well), I actually prefer the BOSE QC35 headphones and the Artone 3 MAX neckloop.  Both are BlueTooth and can connect that way to various sound sources.  The Roger Pen can ONLY connect via BlueTooth for phone calls. It cannot stream music etc from the phone via BlueTooth so you must use a connection cable.  I could live with the need for the connection cable if there was a way to get 100/0 sound.  When I listen to audiobooks, music, podcasts or do aural rehab I do not want to hear sounds from the room as well.  The BOSE QC35 headphones are noise canceling and the Artone 3 MAX neckloop allows us to choose T to get 100/0 (sound from sound source only) or MT to get 50/50 mix.

I did! It was so much fun and very informative! The catering was top shelf and the dance was terrific! The Med-El staff were very patient, encouraging, knowledgeable, and helpful. I would not hesitate to attend another if needed. I highly recommend going. And Mary Beth, I got to try the Bose QC 35 headphones... AMAZING!! My daughter surprised me with them  for Christmas. I cannot believe how clear and "normal" everything sounds through them. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with them ?

I have my 1 year since activation appointment with my audiologist this week. I can't believe it has been a year! Amazing journey so far. I was truly scared about everything before making the decision to go forward with the CI. You were also very helpful and encouraging when I was down. Thank you for helping to ease my fear and supporting me through the doubt and worry! Hope you are well ?

@Janea

I am so happy for you!  I LOVE my BOSE QC35 headphones too!  What a terrific gift from your daughter.

I bet your one year appt will go great this week!  It is amazing how time flies.  My right side has been implanted for 3 years already!  I can hardly believe it myself.

Jeff Campagna and his team put on an amazing Hands On Hearing workshop.  I have attended several of his Hands On Hearing workshops and they are all so meaningful to people because they get small group help and get to listen with various devices.  I wish those workshops were scheduled all over the US each year so everyone could attend one.  I have not experienced the dance party yet though.  Maybe one day.  Smile.

wishing you the best.
