HearPeers Heroes Megan L. Posted November 6, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 6, 2018 It’s been a while since I had a WOW moment but tonight I had one! We have a shuttle at work that drops us off and picks us up and drives us back to NJ. Tonight when we were driving through Times Square, I kept hearing this repeated noise - it wasn’t a honk and it wasn’t quite a screech, it was something in between. I looked out the window to see a cop directing traffic and he was repeatedly blowing his whistle! It made me smile and of course realize once again how amazing this CI is even after almost 2 years ? HearPeers Heroes Valentin Posted November 10, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 10, 2018 Drops of rain on the roof, the leaves of the trees running down the street or the people walking on them. HearPeers Heroes Mary Featherston Posted November 11, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 It's snowing here today. ? But I was able to hear almost everything said today at the MED-EL Meetup, though the room and the meeting table were large. It was a WOW to know that all of us were CI users and we could all hear! That is a big WOW moment and hearing achievement. Awesome!!! It was very cool, if you get a chance to go to a meet-up, I'd encourage it. Especially now you're in New York, you can probably meet Mary Beth too. But no, we had fall, it was just kind of dull. Overcast and rainy a lot, so now that it's below zero it's overcast and snowing. I suspect this is going to be a long winter.... Megan L.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted November 11, 2018 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 A different kind of WOW moment Sometimes WOW moments are not flashy, yet they are special WOW moments for sure! My spouse had surgery for a right total knee replacement and I am so thankful for the hearing my CIs have given me! Hospitals are challenging listening environments. Machines are beeping non-stop, wheeled items are clanking through the hallways, many people are talking all at once. I am so thankful that my CIs allowed me to hear everything so my spouse could focus on just being a patient and not also have to interpret everything for me. We both trusted my hearing and these CIs did not let us down. Thank you Med-El! Megan L., Jewel and Mary Featherston
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted November 11, 2018 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 We are approaching the 3rd anniversary of my left CI’s activation thus making me bilateral. Time sure does fly! Sometimes when I am at home I just sit and listen to the quiet normal sounds of our household. Even though I am in a room alone, I can hear family members all over the house. Waking up, taking a shower, making coffee, preparing a meal... It may seem insignificant to others, but it is sooo significant to me. I used to only know what was happening in the room I was in at the time. And honestly, if people were talking in that room, I didn’t know everything that was even happening in that room. Now I am in tune with our whole home. I’ve been living this amazing dream of hearing with my CIs for 3 years now and I am still amazed everyday. I hope you all have a happy listening day today! HearPeers Heroes Mary Featherston Posted November 11, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 So, @Mary Beth, you put your processors on as soon as you get up? Right now I'm sitting at my laptop in the quiet - my husband is still sleeping, the cats are around somewhere, but I've got in the habit of putting my processors on after Ron's up, because until then, no talking occurs. HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted November 11, 2018 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 @Mary Featherston I have been addicted to listening ever since my first CI was activated! I have my CIs on from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep. Off only for showering. I love listening! HearPeers Heroes Megan L. Posted November 11, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 Happy 3rd Hearing Anniversary @Mary Beth!!! I know what you mean about knowing where everyone in the house is ? These CIs are amazing and super thank you to Med El! @Mary Featherston I don’t put my “ears” in until I’m ready to walk out the door for work. On the weekends I put them in after I make breakfast because that’s around the time I feel ready for some noise! So it’s not just you ? HearPeers Heroes Mary Featherston Posted November 11, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 Quiet is the familiar for many of us. But hearing's both critical and awesome, and I could not possibly thank my medical team and MED-EL enough for what I've received. HearPeers Heroes Jewel Posted November 11, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 I'm almost like @Mary Beth. I don't need a listening break. I put my CI on after my shower. It only comes off when the battery needs to be replaced and when I'm going to bed. I am just recalling that a year or so ago my neighbour messaged me to apologise for her house alarm going off often. I guess she didn't realise that I never heard it. Lol! Fast forward to a few weeks ago and her alarm kept going off. I heard an alarm and thought it was a car alarm. It was so annoying to hear that faulty alarm going off many times that evening. That was the only time I can recall taking the listening break and I found it amusing that I could choose to hear the alarm or not..unlike my neighbours with normal hearing! ? HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted November 11, 2018 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 @Jewel Sometimes having removable “ears” has advantages! Jewel
HearPeers Heroes Megan L. Posted November 11, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 11, 2018 @Jewel For me it’s not a listening break - it’s more of enjoying the peace and quiet. It’s calming in this hectic, noisy world and comfortable for me. Everyone is different? it’s the benefit to having an on and off switch or removable ears like MB said ? It happened to my last Sunday and then I remembered I need to put on my new processor for Rehab so it catches the old one faster @Megan L. I'm also not fan of breaks but I like to wake up to silence on weekends when my wife is still sleeping. During the week I put the processors on before leaving home. I find it too much hassle to put my processors for just 10-20 mins before shower Jewel and Megan L.
HearPeers Heroes Megan L. Posted November 12, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 12, 2018 @Daniel the Stranger yep I know what you’re saying! It is too much hassle for 10-20 mins before getting a shower. Everybody has their “hearing” routine! Once I deviated from my normal routine and mixed it up and walked out of the house without my ears ? I realized instantly when a car went by my world was on mute!!! My routine almost never varies, and when I get in the car almost the first thing I do is turn on the music. If I couldn't hear it I'd know to go back in! But actually I put on my processors and then tell my husband good-bye, so I wouldn't get to the car. Megan L.
HearPeers Heroes Megan L. Posted November 12, 2018 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted November 12, 2018 @Mary Featherston After that one time, I never mixed up my routine again! Haha ? I turned around and went back into the house to get my ears! Turning on the music is the first thing I do too when getting in my car ??
