New To The MedEl Family!

Hey everyone!

Just got activated yesterday and WOW is it a difference! You really don't know what you are missing until you can hear again.

A little about myself - I was born in 1995 and in Kindergarten, as part of the yearly checks, it was detected that I had some degree of hearing loss in my left ear (I didn't keep the papers and my parents seem to have lost them, so I don't know just how bad it was back then.) Jump forward to senior year of high school, and they tell me I've lost about 75% of my hearing in that ear (whatever that measures to 🤷‍♂️). Having lived with it most of my life, though,  I thought nothing of it.

During 2021 (yay COVID) I hit my insurance cost limits, so I decided to get checked again, see what was left, and if there was any way to "fix" it since I remembered a couple of people from high school having some sort of over-ear thing that wasn't a hearing aid. Test results came back: You have basically no hearing above 1k hz. This was the first time I got to see my charts and what I saw was frightening. 100+db to hear anything at or over 1k hz. 2^12 times louder than normal talking volume.

I didn't get scheduled in time to get a more in-depth test to see if I could get CI at the time, because it was already November and they were booked until March. So I waited. Tested again, and they wanted to wait a year because my bass tones were just a hair too good of hearing for what they wanted - a hybrid implant.

Jump forward to Aug 4, 2023 - I'm now implanted. Just got activated yesterday and even my audiologist was amazed - I could understand words from the get-go. Speach sounds slightly reverbed, and a touch fuzzy - but I can understand it in most situations now.

The second best decision in my life, second only to marrying my wife.

So happy for you @TechnoMonoCo!  Which processor are you using?

I have the Sonnet 2 EAS. I'm working with my Audi to see if I can get a second, specifically Rondo 3, to use for swimming and other wet activities - haven't put the waterwear on my Sonnet yet, but it looks like I'd have to remove the EAS portion every time, which would be obnoxious, but doable, if the second processor doesn't get covered by insurance.

@TechnoMonoCo

That would be inconvenient for sure.  A different hook is needed when not using the EAS component.  It is a closed hook.  And everything will sound different for you.  Fingers crossed for the Rondo 3

I don't think it would be right to compare CI and HA; their functions are different from each other.

Hi guy, when i was working with medel in 2021 they tried but could not find any way for second processor. I would love to try rondo also but would have to pay cash. Are you in any researches??

I'll update you when I hear back from my audi. She said it's unlikely because of insurance, but she's still looking into it.
