I just got my Rondo 3 Audiostream.  Configuration took two tries but it now working and I am streaming the R3 directly as I write this.  One odd items is that is listed on my Bluetooth menu as "AudioStream Adapter" but my Sonnet 2 Audiostream is listed as "Tim's Hearing Device".  This is on a Pixel 6a with Android 14. Not a big deal as long as I can switch between them both easily. I'll perhaps try covering this more in a future item talking about audio quality as requested by @Mary Beth.

This post is about the retention device included for R3 Audiostream.  If you never use retention clips for your CIs, I admire your ability to avoid accidents and you can stop reading here!

Background - for the 1.5 years since activation, I have always used a clothes clip with Rondo 3 and it is has saved the device from hitting the ground dozens of times.  I liked the Rondo 3's clothes clip so much, I rigged up a similar one for my Sonnet 2.  I saw that the Rondo 3 Audiostream came with a retention device for keeping the adapter secure with a clothes clip.  (Also, I'm one of the people that always keeps my phone in a semi protective case.)  The only time that I don't use a clothes clip on a CI is sometimes I'll remote it from my Sonnet 2 under headphones to help it fit better and get a better seal for noise isolation.

I went looking back at my original Rondo 3 accessory set and I see in the "Rondo 3 Clip Set" there are short the mini clips that come in both short and long size. Perhaps the short one is meant as more a hair clip.

Here are pictures of my 5 CI clips side by side.  (Sorry, only had a US tape measure handy, 3 inches is a little over 7.5 cm; 9 inches is almost 23 cm.)  Above the tape measure are my "daily driver" clothes clips for the Sonnet 2 and Rondo 3.  Below the tape measure is the R3 with Audiostream and then the two unused miniclips for the R3.

The Rondo 3's "adapter sleeve" cord is 3x shorter.  Why?  Has Med-El received a lot of consumer feedback that the cord is far too long?  Why not include a "clothes clip" length in the sleeve.  It may be difficult to rig up a system to replace the cord in the attached to the retention clip.

It is far too short attach to even a collared shirt.  Notice that wearing it unattached is a bad idea.  It just dangles asking for trouble and distraction.

I'm adding a picture of showing it hanging. (Not a flattering photo of me either - it is hard to take a selfie in this way!)

Also, the very small clip is harder to deal with from a manual dexterity perspective.  In fact, I like the big sewing clip on my rigged system!  Perhaps people don't use the clothes clip.  I hope that Med-El adds a true clothes clip to that R3 Audiostream retention device.  The current retention device seems useless for my use unless I cut the cord off.

Maybe I could rig up an alternative attachment to the clear plastic clip or maybe an alternative to the clear plastic clip.

Would like to hear who really uses the short clips on the Rondo 3. Is anyone using the plastic retention clip on the Rondo 3 audiostream?

@Mary BethThanks!  I must have missed that part of @Andrew42's story.  Andrew, would you be willing to take a picture(s) showing how it was rigged up?

I'm using my S2 Audiostream clip connected to the end of the R3 AS retention system's metal clip today.

Cord will be a little too long now at about 12 inches but usable.

I did a search and found other people wrestling with related issues before I got implanted.

In this thread

@Valentin shows off his improvised solution.

In here @Jewel talks about her solution.

I always wondered if we could rig something like this up with Rondo 3 by using a thin filament loop

Tim, I am happy to add a photo of my clip. It is a mixture of the two clips you show. One above the ruler and one below it. My length was eyeballed and is 28 cm at the full length of the gut and 26cm when measured from the outer edge of the Rondo holder and the start of the retaining clip. Effectively, is slight longer than I need. If you make one up for yourself you can tailor it to your needs. After al its only fishing gut.20240624_081227831_iOS.thumb.jpg.b56f2a8f2d1c3d8f62109cd90aa05d62.jpg

@Valentin Thanks.  I'm waiting to literally "cut the (short) cord" on my existing retention clip but expect that I'll eventually end up doing something like your solution but with the even bigger sewing clothes clip.  Reassuring to know that I won't be the only one.

How are you liking your R3 Audiostream?  You've probably had it a good bit longer than us in the US.

@Timyou can pick up some cording or elastic beading thread at a local hobby/sewing store and replace the existing cord with one with the length of your choice.

I just received my audio stream and am listening to a book now ...
