Hello everybody. My name is caiti and I am 25 years old (oh yes, 25, it shocks me too). I am scheduled for a cochlear implant surgery on my left side on September 19th, 2024! I am very excited.
I was born deaf in my left ear, apparently I passed my newborn hearing test, but was diagnose with sensorineural hearing loss in the second grade, and from then, had used a Phonak FM system until senior year. I then got CROS hearing aids in June of 2020, and then Phonak Naida P90-UP in August of 2023.
Me and my hard of hearing teacher have worked together to come up that wearing the hearing aid in my left ear, does not do anything for me, and it’s basically as useless as the lifeguard at the Olympics. I only feel the sound when it’s so loud, and it’s uncomfortable. Since then, I only wear the right hearing aid, which is a lot better than wearing both, but I’m very curious and excited about my cochlear implant on my left side.
I do have a few questions though, and was wondering if anyone could give some advice.

i got a gastric bypass surgery in October of 2020, which is why I’m comfortable getting my cochlear implant surgery, and since then I’ve lost 260 pounds, and started the sport of CrossFit. I use CrossFit as an outlet for anxiety as well, so I’m wondering when I can workout after my surgery? I also am wondering how the bandage will be for recovery, since I wear glasses, and can’t really see without them.

i am also wondering if there is anything else I should be aware of, mainly if anyone has experience with my kind of hearing loss (audiogram attached), and if there are any neurodivergent individuals as well here (I am adhd + autism) that can tell me how the stimulation is.

thank you very much.

@Caiti epic

Welcome to HearPeers!  I am in New York State.  Where are you?

We implanted my right ear after it not processing any sound for 24 years but it had heard to varying degrees before then.  Practicing with my CI turned that right ear into a great CI ear.

Each CI surgeon gives restrictions for surgery and they vary a bit.  Check with your CI surgeon for her/his restrictions.

I removed the arm from an old pair of glasses and used that until it was comfortable to wear glasses again.

Wishing you the best!
