Ernesto
Hello Hear Peers Community, I hope you’re all doing well. I’ve been experiencing a puzzling issue with my cochlear implants (CIs). The volume suddenly increases to a very high-level several times a day and stays that way for about a minute or two. After that, it drops so low that I can only hear voices and words. This happens on its own, and my audiologist hasn’t identified the cause. Has anyone else encountered this problem? What steps did you take to address it? Are there any settings or troubleshooting tips that worked for you? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help! Ernesto
Yes, I am in the US. I will contact them ASAP. Have you heard anything like this tho?
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted July 16 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted July 16 No. And we should not experience any random volume changes so if it was me, I would contact Med-El US right away for technical support. @Ernesto

I do experience it sometimes. Does it happen specifically when there is a bit of background noise like water running or cutting the grass with a gas lawnmower? Ernesto
When I'm driving or streaming, mostly. Sometimes, when I'm un my room and the AC is on.
Lauren
Just curious if you’re using Adaptive Intelligence or Always Adaptive in your map(s). Obviously still check with your audiologist first and/or Med-El’s 1:1 in case something is going on with your processors. Wondering as the only time my processors went haywire with volume was when I tried those settings. I dumped those settings fast as I could and have bare programs that I can fully control in terms of sensitivity and volume. Hoping it’s not a problem with the processors or anything. Good luck! John Schulz
It's definitely a bug in Med-Els ambient noise reduction. I believe it's a rollover bug in their firmware code but I doubt they'd admit that. I think this because it happens after a certain amount of time; about 6-8 minutes.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted July 17 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted July 17 Consider having ambient noise reduction turned off
Sakin
Such loud sounds may occur when water gets into the cable or coil or when we sweat excessively. It may be helpful to place it in a drying container and dry thoroughly
Deanne
I have been having a strange issue with my rondo 3 where it’s almost as though the ai filtering is not working, then things clear up. Doesn’t seem to happen with my sonnet 2. i had a 1:1 appointment, swapped out my rondo 3. It is still happening. They are thinking of increasing my magnet. What processor is this happening with? HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted July 18 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted July 18 That’s interesting @Deanne Keep us posted.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted July 18 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted July 18 @Deanne If changing magnet strength doesn’t fix this issue that happens only with your Rondo 3 even though it was replaced, you can consider asking for a MAP that has the adaptive intelligence turned off yet is set to the parameters you like. This way it will not automatically change based on listening condition yet will offer the features you like. If your program is adaptive intelligence mild, asking for AI to be off but these features used: mic setting natural windblock mild transient noise reduction mild ambient noise reduction mild may help to avoid the problem you are experiencing. Ernesto
I recently saw my audiologist for another mapping session (I’ve lost count of whether it’s the second or third one). I explained the issues I’m experiencing with the loudness, and she was a bit surprised, mentioning that she hadn’t heard of anything like that before. She suggested that it might be due to an algorithm causing the issue. She added some new programs and assured me that this should resolve the problem. She asked me to let her know if it continues and scheduled my next appointment for six months from now. Unfortunately, the issue has occurred more frequently, so I contacted Medel today. They informed me that they would reach out to my audiologist on Monday to review the programs and would likely send me two new processors. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes. By the way, even though I am having this issue, I am so loving my CI's. For some reason, I tend to lean more on my Rondo 3.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted August 24 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted August 24 @Ernesto I hope the replacement processor solves this issue for you. If the problem though is happening with both your Rondo 3 and Sonnet 2 processors, it may not be a processor specific defect. Fingers crossed. Deanne
@Ernesto I saw my audi and we ended up turning off one of the electrodes. The sounds I was experiencing and others, that I thought I were normal - road noise was really loud for one - have gone away. I'm doing more rehab to relearn some sounds, but am really excited since they went away.
