Implant and travel

Recommended Posts

I would like to address a question to the community. I am a candidate for CI in one ear.  I also want to travel overseas for about five weeks. Is it advisable to travel long trip by air after the implant or wait for implant after my return from over seas. Has any one faced such a situation keeping in mind that CI team may not be available in other countries.  Please comment. Thanks

Hi @Vinod

My CI surgeon had a rule about when it was safe for me to fly so my advice is to ask your CI team for their rules.

You may want to also ask about activation and your MAPping schedule after being activated.  Every CI team does things differently.

Hi @Vinod

My surgeon cleared me to fly 10 days after surgery. I ended up losing most of my good frequencies. So if I were you I'd wait until the overseas trip is over before getting the CI.

Of course check with your surgeon but I think the longer the time is between your flight and the surgery the better.

Hi Jewel,

Thank you for your input.  I don't want to take any chances and will get CI after I return from the trip.  Thanks.    By the way how many weeks or months you think it will take to totally heal up and become normal. I  do understand there is a lot of  practice after activation.

I take a plane after 3 days of surgery. My implant center is in other center and I must to reach it and return to my home by plane. It is true that the altitude is not like an overseas flight. However, comment it with your surgeon.

@Vinod

Well I felt fine pretty quickly after surgery but the swelling didn't go down fully until last week; that's 7 weeks after surgery.

But I was out and about the first week after surgery and returned to work about two weeks after surgery.

@Vinod and @Jewel  my swelling took longer than 7 weeks to go down completely, but it was minor enough that it didn't impact my use of the CI.

I'm taking a week off work, but will go back a week from Monday.
