First CI surgery in 3 weeks. New to forum.

Hello everyone!

I am new to this forum. Just set up my profile. I am scheduled for my first CI surgery (right ear) on April 12th. I'm a bundle of different emotions right now. Excited, anxious and terrified.

I am trying to stay focused and positive. I have read a lot of the comments here in the forum. I have also done my research on Cochlear implantation and have spoken with a few recipients. It's been overwhelming for the most part. Everybody has a slightly different story. I am receiving my first CI in my worse ear and I'm getting the Rondo 2. I live a very active lifestyle and It's been quite a concern for me how having the Rondo will work out. I'm very hopeful it will be great.

Part of the reason I wanted to join this forum is for support from people who know what it means to be hearing impaired. I am surrounded completley by hearing people. My family, my son, my boyfriend, friends and co-workers. While they have been great, it's really not something a hearing person can understand. It's been somewhat isolating because of that. I'm hoping in the coming weeks to talk with anyone that has any advice for first time recipients here. I would greatly appreciate it.

Liz😊

@lizjlong Hi, Liz, and welcome!  I'm glad you joined us.  Rondo2 should be a great choice for an active lifestyle.

I think someone else here is having surgery on April 12th too - we will be waiting to hear from both of you!

Congratulations on your CI surgery date.  Exciting!  I have bilateral CIs and they have been life changing.  Check out our topic on rehab.  Aural rehab helped me a lot!

Which CI center are you using?  I go to NYEE in NYC.

Wishing you the best!  Welcome to HearPeers!

I will check out the rehab topic. I have been told how very important it is. I'm not sure what you mean by CI center? I'm receiving a Med-el Rondo 2 in my right ear via outpatient surgery at a hospital here in Central FL. I have been told that it takes roughly 4 weeks post surgery for activation and this will be done by my Audiologist. I will then continue to see her as adjustments need to be made. Is there a rehab center outside of our Audiologist that we should make use of?

@lizjlong

Sorry for any confusion.  I just meant where are you getting your CI ?  New York Eye & Ear is the CI center I go to.  My surgeons and audiologists are all at the same center.

Most of us just work with CI surgeons and CI audiologists.  A few of us work with specialists on aural rehab too but that is not common for adults in the US unfortunately.

Hi Lizjong, you should be getting both units from Med-el including the behind the ear unit unless Med-El stopped that offer, I have the Rondo 1 seeing my implant was done 3 1/2 years ago. pay attention to these Gal's they know what works and what is rumors, I just changed from WMU to UM here in Michigan to improve my experience with my product and am so happy I did. your support team is so very important like Mary Beth mentioned and no question you ask of your team they will have a answer or try to make corrections to help you. You will be amazed how much you have been missing.

Good Luck

Terrific that you are now working with a CI audiologist that seems to be a great fit for you!  That is so important.  I would be lost without the awesome skills of my CI audiologist.

Welcome, Liz! You're a bit ahead of me in the process. I look forward to reading about your experiences as a guide. Good luck!
