HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted June 6, 2019 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 6, 2019 Today while I was walking through a courtyard up to a school, I heard a bird chirping. I looked ahead in the direction of the birdsong and saw two trees spaced quite a bit apart. One tree to my right and the other tree to my left. The bird continued to sing. It seemed strange to me that the birdsong sounded like it was coming from a high location between the trees. The bird continued to sing. There was a very tall sculpture located between the two trees. When I looked way up to the very top of that sculpture, I saw the bird singing its heart out. My CIs were right! The birdsong was coming from between the trees! Sound directionality is so much fun! HearPeers Heroes Jewel Posted June 6, 2019 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 6, 2019 Lovely @Mary Beth I usually hear birds chirping outside my house but no matter how hard I look, I can never find the birds! Just goes to show why two CIs are better than one. Mary Beth
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted June 6, 2019 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 6, 2019 @Jewel So many birds. Who knew? Yup. Having binaural hearing now after 24 years without it has made sound directionality so much fun. I hope things are going great for you! HearPeers Heroes Jewel Posted June 7, 2019 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 7, 2019 Yes @Mary Beth Can't complain. I've been wearing my Rondo2 mostly. Idk how you manage with omni in noisy places. Do you adjust with the Fine tuner? Noisy places are only a problem if I have to talk to someone. I have recently tried adjusting the sensitivity. Seems to help a bit.
Daniel the Stranger
Well I'm 1 year with my first CI and 6 months with my second. I still don't know where the sounds come from.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted June 7, 2019 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 7, 2019 @Jewel I do not adjust any settings on my CIs throughout my day as I move from quiet to noisy places. I leave both the volume and sensitivity settings at the levels my audiologist set them. I stay in one program all of the time and it uses omni mic settings. I have not carried my Fine Tuner with me for a long time, except when I want to use my Artone for streaming audiobooks. That works best for me. But everyone is different and finding what works best for you is what is important. There was an app that trained speech in noise in a 10 x 5 block. There were 5 words in each sentence and 10 choices under each of those 5 words. The noise varied based on the correctness of our responses. When I started with that app, I was terrible. I needed the speech to be 13 decibels louder than the noise in order to get it correct. I asked my hearing spouse to try the app to see what a person with no hearing loss would score. She scored NEGATIVE 3.3 dB! She could correctly identify the speech when it was 3.3 dB QUIETER than the noise. I thought....GAME ON! I need to fix this! So I trained everyday with that app. Slowly my scores started to improve. And I mean slowly. I kept at it. It took me over a year but I beat her score! And along the way, I noticed that I was hearing better and better in noise. All previous Med-El processors ONLY had omni mics so some people were finding ways to hear well in noise with omni mics. Now we have adaptive mic setting. It works well in noise. Depending on the direction of noise with respect to speech, it can be noticeably easier to hear in noise using adaptive with Sonnet 1 processors. I have friends who only use Rondo processors (omni) and they hear fine in noise. I think it is a combination of MAP, training and time. If our MAP is too bass heavy, hearing in noise will be challenging as noise tends to be bassy. Some people have their audiologists create a MAP for noisy places in omni mic and store it in a program slot. Then they switch to that program in noise. Typically it eases off of bass tones and may also reduce sensitivity. Finding your favorite MAP in noise may take some trial and error. I hope you find a way to hear better with your Rondo 2 in noise. It seems like Rondo 2 is your preferred processor. I hope you can get it working for you in all settings. HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted June 7, 2019 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 7, 2019 @Daniel the Stranger Directionality may be working well for me because my right and left CIs are very balanced. I am sure that contributes to locating sounds accurately. I am just amazed I can do it at all after spending 24 years with no hearing at all in my right ear ..... thus absolutely no ability to locate sound directionality. I hope things are going well for you.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted June 7, 2019 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 7, 2019 @Jewel Here is a pic of the speech in noise app I like. It does not work on iPads using iOS 11 or later yet. I emailed them and asked. They did not reply. I have it on an older model iPad and it still works great. Communication at work has improved heaps and I'm not scared anymore to interact with students and staff. I don't forget that this is a long process, my Audiologist can't believe how patient and positive am I. Jewel and Mary Beth
HearPeers Heroes Mary Featherston Posted June 7, 2019 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 7, 2019 Thanks, @Mary Beth I will look for that app. I know I need some work on hearing in noise. Sometimes it's hard not to envy hearing people! -3.3 decibels! Wow. But I'm happy with my CIs. I was just thinking today how quickly the level of hearing I get with them became my new normal. 🙂 Jewel

I still have my coworker's old ipad but I haven't been practising with this app. I was at my place of worship today and a lady was talking to me and I had to ask her to repeat her question four times! I was wearing my Rondo 2! I haven't had an experience like that in such a long time! I think I would have fared better with the Sonnet. I definitely need to practise! I won't be tested until March so there is time but I can still benefit now.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted June 10, 2019 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted June 10, 2019 @Jewel I am training speech in noise again too. Sometimes it seems that I need a brush up!
