Miriam H
I thought I'd share Linnea's, my now 13 year old daughters' speech she wrote for school last year for a speech competition called the Tropicana Speech. She presented her speech in front of a big crowd and made it all the way to district where she placed 4th with her speech! All the other kids in this competition were normal hearing peers. Yes, needless to say I was extremely proud of my daughter. I hope that by sharing this other parents or adults considering a CI can feel inspired. Also will be happy to answer any questions. See attached speech below
HearPeers Heroes Sandy Posted January 30, 2014 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted January 30, 2014 Wow, that is so good. Exactly how I feel some days. Tune them out! But I CAN HEAR! Your daughter says it all. I can relate to the sleeping too! Until I had my implant, I slept a maximum of 5 hours per night. Now I sleep in when I want to. I also relate to all the sounds when I first put my processor on and now find I want to hear! Her speech should be given to all audiologists to be given to potential CIs. Especially young children and teenagers. I've been told teens are the hardest to convince. Linnea is a poster teen!
Camille
Thanks for sharing Miriam, and GO LINNEA!!!! I've recently been in lengthy conversations with a mother of a 17 year old who is struggling to seriously consider a CI even though her hearing aids are not strong enough anymore. From my experience, Sandy is correct, a decision to go with a CI seems hardest for teens. Thank you Linnea for spreading the good news!!! HearPeers Heroes Ivana Marinac Posted January 31, 2014 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted January 31, 2014 Miriam - excellent and easy-understandable letter which points out each possible corner of CI matter and hearing loss. This letter can also be applied even to conductive hearing loss - I would sign each sentence. Give a hug to Linnea for me

Miriam H
Thanks for all of your nice comments! @ Sandy: That's a really good idea. Both Linnea and I love to help. Unfortunately the teenagers are (like a few of you said) kinda "stubborn" and not easy to convince sometimes... Lol. Several times we've been asked by audiologist to have conversations or email exchange with teens considering CI's, but we don't hear from them. @ Camille: I can totally sympathize with the 17 year old's mom, it's not easy with this age group. Good luck to her and her daughter! Thanks to Ivana too!
Proudcimom
Thank you for sharing! I loved it! My son is 11 and often does mini presentations on cochlear implant 101. I love her positive attitude and sense of humor! I love hearing about their hearing experiences from their perspective. I will share her speech with him. I'm sure he'll be able to relate! I would have been very proud too! Go Linnea!
