Alteration of sound quality.

I am trying to understand why my sound quality has changed from being crisp and clear to becoming muffled?  Is it an alteration in my hearing system so to speak.

At the end of May I had a mapping session and I was really encouraged because there was an immense improvement in my hearing as mentioned very crisp, that lasted for 2 months and then things changed I was not deciphering too well - the echo that had always been there but did not interfere with my hearing performance, this became more prevalent.  Why did things change when everything was going so well.  Beginning of September had another mapping session hoping for improvements and during the appointment in the small room after the mapping it seemed alright to me.  But when I returned home to my normal environment I realised that the mapping had not made things better.

What changes so that it makes it necessary to keep going back to the audiologist for a new mapping, I guess that is what I`m trying to say.  I was activated 7 months ago.  I am trying to improve things by diligently doing the daily hearing exercises.

Hi Marion,

Thanks for reaching out to the community. The best thing that you can do is stay in close contact with your audiologist and cochlear implant team. They will know your story and be able to advise you in the best way. I will send you a private message to find out more details so that I can inform your MED-EL representative as well.

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben,

I will have to confess I do not have a MED-EL implant!  But I thought maybe I could receive some input on this particular question no matter what make of implant a person had.  I have posted before on this forum and have received a lot of help for which I have appreciated.

Thank you for your response and for trying to help.

Hi Marion,

This journey is not always a straight line, right? Sometimes things improve and then get worse. When that happens, it seems to always be time for a MAPping change. Some MAPs I have liked right away. Some MAPs I had to adjust to for awhile. Try not to feel discouraged. Keep communicating with your audiologist and request a new MAPping appointment when you feel things are "off".

You can always request to have the previous MAP reinstalled. Be aware though that it most likely will not sound the same as you remember.

Best of luck.

Hi Mary Beth,

Thank you for your reasoning on this,  pointing out that the journey is not always in a straight line!

I have got to the point in my journey where my next MAPping appointment is supposed to be in 5 months time.  Seeing as it is only a month since I saw my audiologist I`m going to let a little time go by before I ask her for an appointment earlier than the 5 months.....she may think that I should give this new MAPping a longer try!!

I had thought of asking for it to be reset to the adjustment made in May but I`m thinking on your lines that it may not sound the same as I remember.

 I

Also as mentioned I work on the daily hearing exercises with just wearing the implant and not my hearing aid......then for the rest of the day I wear both.  Maybe that is a mistake and I should spend most of the day with just wearing the implant.

Thank you so much again, Mary Beth, for your help.....so much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Marion

Usually people will use the CI only for a little while or at least a couple hours a day and wear the Processor and HA the rest of the day. Your brain does need some time to get used to hearing with the implant. That being said, you also have to get used to using the implant and HA together. It is going to take time for things to settle down. Try not to get discouraged. It will get better. If you are still having trouble, for sure set up another mapping. Also take very detailed notes as far as what things sound like, the environment your in, what it sounds like with the HA, with the ha..... This will really help the your Audi try to tweak things. That being said, it is just going to take some time for your brain to adjust. Every bodies brain is a little different so it is hard to tell a time frame. Try to be patient and be sure to let us know how things are going and if you have any questions. We are here to support and encourage you as best we can.

Let me join to Adam and Mary Beth with my experience although it's totally other system but part with adjusting is still here.

I had one favourite map, which I liked a lot because of music was fantastic, that's how I thought, but understanding deteriorated si bad that I couldn't understand people. We changed the map, I thought it is awful and ask for my old map after a month or so. I got it - what is this?

- This is your old map.

- Aaaa... this is totally different, it was so skinny without timber at all...My hearing evolved in the mean time and I didn't catch that without comparison.

This episode thought me a ton of matters.
