HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted December 9, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 9, 2015 That would be great. Anyone from Canada who was successful becoming bilateral recipient??
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted December 9, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 9, 2015 Kara, If you search Facebook there is a MedEl CI discussion Group. There is at least one person from Canada active on the board who has bilateral CIs and another person who is on the wait list for a second CI. Maybe they can help you. Never give up Sandy - it's not really fair to say patients: You know, you are taking this device to someone else... :( So never NEVER give up
HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted December 9, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 9, 2015 So Sandy I am not sure how old you are. But I found an amazing stat for Canada that says 4.6 million people in Canada live with hearing loss. But of those only 7% havens severe to profound and are under the age of 60. So people my age which is 38 should be condisered more than those older as we will have to live much longer generally speaking. Also the world health organization states that hearing loss is the leading cause of years lost due to disability. They concluded that years lost due too earring loss as a disability was 24.9 million years. Which sounds stupid but that show many lives were shortened because of hearing loss. So us younger people should really speak up and become bilateral it will help to prolong our. Lives in general!!!
HearPeers Heroes Sandy Posted December 10, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 Thanks for the lovely compliment "us younger people". I became an official senior citizen this year or as I call it "officially mature". I can understand your reasoning, however, the average life span now is around 85. That gives me another 20 years of hearing. I do agree that we should all speak up to become bilateral; it would improve our quality of life. HearPeers Heroes Adam Posted December 10, 2015 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 Easy fix Take all the hearing away from the folks that make the decisions just for one day so they can experience it just for one day. That would be a good eye opener. Kind of like when I am lying in bed right after brain surgery and a doctor walks in and tells me he understands what I am going through but he probably has never even been a patient let alone had brain surgery. Let them cut a hole in your head, then tell me you understand. Ok sorry about that. My little rant is over. Let us know how things progress Kara
HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted December 10, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 Please Adam it is good to speak about how you feel. That's the way we can support each other. Good rant!! I agree. I generally make my doctors scared because unexpected things happen when they do surgery on me!! I had one actually truthfully tell me he had night mares after he did my c section. With the implant surgery they were freaked out after. Watching me like a hawk. But as for people thinking that we don't need to be bilateral would be insane. How can they expect us to live a "good" life if we can only hear out of one ear?? It doesn't make any sense to me. If they had one leg or one arm or one eye or one working ear they may sympathize with us but they really do take it for granted. Man some people!!!! End of rant!! Lol
HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted December 10, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 That right Sandy! That would give me 46 years to live.
HearPeers Heroes Ivana Marinac Posted December 10, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 Well... Unfortunately, medicine is still taken more as function not an art of good living although WHO defines health as: "“a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” It was defined at the conference in Alma Ata (Mongolia) in 1978. As an socialistic state sometimes before, society in Croatia revive this definition often.
HearPeers Heroes Adam Posted December 10, 2015 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 I heard an interesting saying and I think there is a lot of truth to it as no two people are the same "Medicine is more of an art than a Science"
HearPeers Heroes Ivana Marinac Posted December 10, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 10, 2015 A good mixture of both, Adam...

HearPeers Heroes Adam Posted December 11, 2015 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 11, 2015 Yep ivana You get some patients who present with typical symptoms, and there's me ) If I had a penny every time I had a doctor tell me this is unusual or the first time they have seen it, I'd be a rich man
HearPeers Heroes Ivana Marinac Posted December 11, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 11, 2015 Well, Adam - I would say it's all about individual lucidity.
HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted December 11, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 11, 2015 I would be a rich woman also! When my thrid was born they did a she dulled c section they ended up doing a bowel resection as well. I. Used to get wax blued up all the time and needed frequent flushings in my ears. The old ENT told me never to get another referral as I was a special case. When I had kidney reconstruction they gave me an epidural for pain. I could walk. They were shocked. And on and on. So right with you there bionic buddy!!

HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted December 14, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 14, 2015 Nothing new with me other than many new sounds all the time! I heard little feet upstairs in our church today. Pattering on the floor above. I have never heard that one before.
HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted December 14, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 14, 2015 I have been noticing that my hearing journey is unique. I hope that no. Ew or otherwise is offended by my journey. Not to say it is easy, I just don't want anyone to feel down or shafted that their journey is somewhat different from mine. I am not here to gloat or bring myself above others. Just saying.
HearPeers Heroes Sandy Posted December 14, 2015 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted December 14, 2015 Kara, you are not gloating. Each person's journey is unique. I'm still in awe of the sounds I now hear. Each day is a new experience to be treasured. Keep the posts coming.
