HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted February 23, 2016 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 23, 2016 As a nudge to them I sent them a blurb from the human rights code of Canada. They have a duty to accommodate!!! Maybe they will make a note if it finally.
HearPeers Heroes Sandy Posted February 24, 2016 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 24, 2016 It seems to be a common occurrence in doctors offices, Kara. The response I get the most is "We don't use email for confidentiality reasons". My answer now is "Well, I guess we just won't be communicating". That being said, I've educated a number of my medical doctors, physiotherapist, gp and dentist and they now email me. Still working on the orthopaedic surgeon's staff. HearPeers Heroes Ivana Marinac Posted February 24, 2016 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 24, 2016 Kara, disclaimer should be enough precaution otherwise it is ridiculous... How they could know that it is not somebody else on the phone...?

HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted February 24, 2016 Author HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 24, 2016 I have call name and number display. So I always know who it is. Except for those stiupid telemarketers. Which I don't answer. We get very few.
HearPeers Heroes Cara Mia Posted February 26, 2016 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 26, 2016 Kara, you give me a good idea about sending "a blurb from the human rights code of Canada" Last December I tried to make an appointment for my annual check up in person, but was asked to do it over the phone or go to a central clinic office to a scheduler (40 minutes to drive).... The same hard to accept reasons..... In such situations I am just glad for people that they are so lucky not to have any small idea how it can be challenging to be so limited because of some health conditions. But I agree that It would be great if all folks involved in a medical service were trained to communicate properly with people with different types of medical issues. The health organization specialists are also should understand well the patients' needs to design the proper care system. Unfortunately, have not so much idea how to start changing that situation as their name is Legion

HearPeers Heroes Sandy Posted February 26, 2016 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 26, 2016 For me, it's very frustrating, not only because of the hearing but I use a walker so going out especially in winter can be a challenge. Most people who think a place is "handicap accessible" have never used a wheelchair, Walker or crutches. I've challenged a number of people to "walk in my shoes for a wee" both with the hearing and the physical disability. Most aren't willing! Hope it never happens to them! HearPeers Heroes Cara Mia Posted February 27, 2016 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 27, 2016 Can you schedule an appointment online? Theoretically, I can. To do so, I need to set up my account by entering my email and four last digits of my SSN. The problem is that my SSN was entered incorrectly into the hospital system. To fix that, I need to go to a central office and proof my identity. And I was told that it will take time for the hospital to correct their mistake. For me, it's very frustrating, not only because of the hearing but I use a walker so going out especially in winter can be a challenge. Most people who think a place is "handicap accessible" have never used a wheelchair, Walker or crutches. I've challenged a number of people to "walk in my shoes for a wee" both with the hearing and the physical disability. Most aren't willing! Hope it never happens to them! Sandy, I don't know what to say to make you feel a little bit better about that...... That's very sad situation. Perhaps we get that challenge to practicing our skills to be saints - wise and forgiving. I doubt you can learn people to use - their gray matter... Ivana, I know that I can be naïve, but still hope that if to find the right motivation, people can employ their grey matter. - it doesn't cause any brain damage. HearPeers Heroes Ivana Marinac Posted February 27, 2016 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 27, 2016 Don Quijote Just kidding - my observation is just ironic observation which is not oppose to your proposition. I just constantly see same mistakes - asking hard of hearing person to call you although not complicated thinking process tells you that this oppose to logic... HearPeers Heroes Adam Posted February 27, 2016 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 27, 2016 I had to relearn how to walk after my labrynthectomy. It was no fun for sure. Had to use a walker for a while, then graduated to a cane. Can be frustrating navigating out in the world
