Pickleball and the Implanted

To all you HearPeers members with experience:

I played Pickleball**this morning for the first time since my Activation day, 13 days ago. There were four people playing in a court in front of our court BUT I could have sworn I heard the ball Bouncing off the racquets BEHIND me from the other court. I stood still in my court, and literally turned around several times. Sonnets do not have the second Mike turned on yet so can someone explain?

Elaine

** Pickleball is a game played on a court, slightly shorter than a tennis court, but played with a racquet similar to a racquetball racquet and a woofle ball. The ball is served underhand not overhead like tennis.

Were people also playing on a court behind you? Or are you wondering why it sounded like the sound came from behind you when it was actually in front of you?

This is what I was wondering also - it's so easy to get confused if you are solely dependent on one device.

To Ivana and Mary Beth,

There was no court behind me, and yes, I was wondering why I heard the sound behind me when I could see that the sound was from the court in front of me.

FYI- I always had a hard time locating sounds.

Hmmm I would say it's because it is still early days for you but people vary greatly in the ability to locate sounds.

I bet that was odd. Well maybe that will only happen when you play pickleball! As long as people who are talking to you do not seem to be standing behind you, it will be okay!

Our brain can play tricks on us. That sort of thing has happened to me in the past.

I have had this problem many times. I turn around in all directions trying to figure where a sound is coming from sometimes.

Folks - without 2 ears there is no actual hololocation ability - just pure luck. :)

Ok, now when I said this I have to share that since I have an implant it's far more tough to orientate but, in my case, it's because of equal stimulation or not significant difference between them. When I had a hearing aid and stimulus came at least in fromt or back I could find the source. If we complicate situation by a cocktail party effect, this is visible even before...

Yes now with 2 CIs, I am finding that I do have some localizing sound ability! Yeah! I was teaching last night in a room full of 23 students sitting in a U shape. A cell phone went off and I immediately looked at the correct student! The student was embarrassed about the cell phone. I was thrilled I located the sound source right away! Smile.

Excellent Mary Beth - this will only be better umtil you won't even think about it :)

Hololocation is the ability like any other - we just need to exercise it.

Well... I still no, but - hope one day...:)

Thanks Ivana. Now that your tests are all done, what are you doing? Is your residency completed and now you are an ENT doctor on your own? Sorry but I am not familiar with all the steps you must go through. Do you plan on working as an ENT surgeon specializing in implants? Curious minds want to know! Smile.

Hello ladies  :)

It is really no problem to clarify my professional life  :P

Yes - my residency including specializing of Ear, Nose Throat aka Otorhinolaringology field is over now and now I hold a position of ENT specialist aka otorhinolaryngologist. For a few years I will be available to get the final step - a narrow field of sub-specialty in the field of Otology and audiology but I work everything. Well... Croatia is a small country and our implant program is not wide as it should be due to the health insurance which is manly state and there is a fixed quota of implants per year.

I am very interesting in this field so beside my regular job I constantly educate myself further in this field as well I am participating to this forum and groups so I can see from the patient`s perspective what are their problems, tips&tricks and where are possible blanks. I have wide interests so I am even interesting in technical troubleshooting as well as medical issues.  :)
