Kathimorg
Hi All, I am new to this forum and thank everyone already for your valuable input! I have been wearing hearing aids for ~7 years. I am 61 and still working as an ER RN, finding my job increasingly difficult due to hearing loss, and not ready to quit! I stumbled upon information about EAS on a Sirius radio broadcast on the medical station while channel surfing one day and am fascinated by it. I have been seen by a local audiologist and also one from Mass Eye and Ear, but no one mentioned this as a possibility for me, so unsure if I am a candidate. Can you recommend a MD or office in the Boston or MetroWest Boston area for me so I could get tested? I read about the work they are doing in North Carolina at Chapel Hill and wouldn't mind going there but obviously, closer to home would be better! Thank you in advance for any advice. HearPeers Heroes hadron Posted February 21, 2017 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 21, 2017 Hi Kathimorg, You should contact a MED-EL Consumer Outreach Manager (COM) whom can discuss EAS with you and also CI centers near you. I believe Gina Greco is still one of the Northeast COMs. Her contact information is below. Good luck. GINA GRECO Phone: (919) 357-6006 Email: gina.greco@medel.com

MED-EL Moderator
Hi, thanks for reaching out to the HearPeers community! I've sent you a private message with the contact details of your local MED-EL Representative who will be able to put you in touch with a local hearing specialist. Kind regards, Leigh HearPeers Support Team. 16 hours ago, Kathimorg said: Hi All, I am new to this forum and thank everyone already for your valuable input! HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted March 14, 2017 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted March 14, 2017 Wishing you the best! Which processor did you choose?
AliU83
I will be getting the Sonnet and also the Rondo. I have no idea which one I will prefer and will have to talk with my audiologist about them! I have never worn hearing aids, so I am certainly hoping the Rondo works well--I would prefer nothing to be on my ear and wear glasses all the time. HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted March 14, 2017 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted March 14, 2017 I have Sonnets and Rondos too. I also wear glasses all the time. Both are great. I use Sonnets as primary processors and use Rondos in waterwear covers for fun in or near the water.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted March 14, 2017 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted March 14, 2017 By the way, it's nothing you are doing wrong that results in duplicate posts. There is a glitch happening. No worries.
HearPeers Heroes Kara of Canada Posted March 16, 2017 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted March 16, 2017 Welcome to Hearpeers!! I am also a unilateral recipient. (One implant) it is the best thing I have done and hearing aids aren't doing me any good either! I am currently on the list for a second implant in my other ear. Best of luck with your journey! Do you mind me asking how you lost your hearing?
AliU83
Adam, My loss is genetic. Like I have read in other posts, the doctors cannot pinpoint it to any specific thing for sure. However, I was fully hearing until age 7. The only incident that could have possible triggered it was being knocked unconscious around that age (being dumb with my sister and fell outside). My sister (older) was born with the same hearing loss. We both have a loss that seems to be the opposite of what is more typical: we can hear high and not low. My sister has worn aids since the age of 4, and has speech discrimination scores of 64% and 88%. While we have a similar hearing pattern score, my speech discrimination is terrible: 4% and 2%. Hearing aids do not improve this, so I have never worn any. I also was told growing up that I have recruitment, which made hearing aids even more uncomfortable. Up until a few years ago, my high frequency hearing actually went as quiet as 40dB, while the low frequencies hit 75 at the worse spots. Now, low starts at 60, drops to 90, and the best hearing in the high frequency range hits 50dB. My speech discrimination is really the bigger problem. I was always able to use the hearing I had coupled with lipreading and got by pretty well. Could never use the phone or watch TV without captions, but I could understand one on one very well. It's much harder now with less sound. I went to RIT and was given c-print for the majority of my college years. Without it, I was lost in the classroom 100% of the time. HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted March 21, 2017 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted March 21, 2017 I am so happy to no longer deal with recruitment! CI tech is amazing.
