Kare
Hello everybody, The Naida CI of Advanced Bionics features Clearvoice and Ultrazoom. UltraZoom allows recipients to focus on sound coming from the front while reducing interference from noise present to the side or behind the listener. UltraZoom can be used on its own or combined with AB’s ClearVoice technology for even more benefit in very difficult listening situations. ClearVoice was a breakthrough for AB, because it was the first algorithm to receive FDA approval with a superiority claim, meaning that it is statistically proven to improve speech perception in noise. There is data from Europe that suggests when ClearVoice is combined with UltraZoom, there is an even more marked improvement in hearing in noise than with either of these features on their own. What about Med-El? Do they also have such features? If not, will be such features be available in the future? I want to make a choice between Med-El's Rondo and AB's Naida. I doubt very much between them. I personally find it very important to be able to understand speech in noise. Question to all Med-El recipients: How well/clear do you hear speech in noisy situations, like restaurants, pub, concert, car, plane etc.? Kind regards, Karen
jpl2ci
Hi Karen, Welcome to HearPeers! the FineTuner (aka remote) allows you to change both the volume and sensitivity of whatever program you are currently in. As you can have up to 4 programs per side, and each one be different, you can have a program to fit almost any situation. here's a link to give you additional information from the MedEl website: http://www.medel.com/int/show/index/id/108/title/FineTuner/ The pic I attached can also help. The volume buttons on the left raise or lower the incoming volume while the right hand side with the ear pictograph adjusts the sensitivity of the microphone, full out, large ear, you hear from everywhere while the smaller ear means you can only hear within a very small radius. the beauty of this setup is you don't need to change programs to customize the sound from talking and listening in the Rijksmuseum to hear the whir of mad cyclists trying to grab the last parking spot by the café! (ask me how I know?) I can only share with you what my experience has been but I do have a program for extremely noisy situations but only use it when the FineTuner adjustments won't work. I have been bilateral for over 3 years and I have learned to "tune out" extraneous noise to a large degree. if you have additional questions, please post away. thanks
HearPeers Heroes Sandy Posted February 13, 2014 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted February 13, 2014 Hi karen and welcome to HearPeers. I've been activated for about 9 months now and use the Finetuner when in noisy situations, especially restaurants. Just to let you know, I was in a noisy restaurant a few weeks ago with a friend and at the end of the meal she commented that not once did I have her repeat anything. I've been implanted in my left ear and have virtually no hearing in the right ear. I also tend to sit in restaurants so I hear less of the background noises. Hope this helps. Kare
John and Sandy, thanks a lot for answering the question! John you have been in Amsterdam, Nice! I have another question: Does Complete Cochlear Coverage (CCC) really helps to understand speech in noise better?
jpl2ci
Karen, I don't want to state that CCC helps you hear better in noise, but what happens is that since the complete cochlea is covers by a highly flexible electrode, you have potentially the greatest area for stimulation and understanding. After several years of activation I am able to "tune" out some of the extraneous noise without too much trouble. Practice and time are your allies, your audi can also tweak your processor maps to give you various programs to be used in various locales. I use that option and it works for me. thanks JOhn
