Sleep Solutions - White Noise

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have been on sleeping medication for almost 12 months due to my severe tinnitus and I am currently trying to ween myself off.

Even though my tinnitus has improved during the day with my CI on it does ramp up to its usual disturbing volume when I take it off to sleep at night.

Has anyone had any positive experience with white noise machines or similar devices.

I don't really find the sleeping noise apps that affective on my phone, but I do enjoy the sound of noisy air con machines and old fans when trying to sleep.

I was just wondering what these machines are like before I purchased one.

Thanks

Hi James

I experience tinnitus at night but not to the extent that you do. I know there are was to lessen it. One way by reducing your caffeine intake. I know there are other ways but can't think of them off the top of my head. I know there are a number of causes of tinnitus. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, I was told that the brain knows there is supposed to be ambient sound. Since it does not detect any, it makes its own. This is why it is more noticeable when your processors are not on.

Maybe look at ways to reduce like caffeine. I am sure your Audi would have some suggestions.

Good luck

James,

I've had tinnitus for almost 20 years, way before I lost my hearing. Mine doesn't sound as severe as yours, but I do remember having many frustrated nights. I also found the only relief I had was when a fan or aircon was running. Over time, I just learned to live with it and I think my brain simply used any background noise to tune it out.

When I lost my hearing the awareness of the tinnitus also came back, and became one of the main reasons for me to get a CI. I'm happy to say that it has helped (at least during the day).

I did come across the below story a little while ago which, by coincidence all began with an SSD patient getting a CI and seeking help with his tinnitus.

I'm not sure how useful that is, but I thought it interesting that the technology was designed around feeding the sound through a CI.

Hope you manage to get some relief.

I am not sure a out the article, but listening anything in the background really helps - brain is not occupied by itself than by other stuff. This is the key.

Yep that is what I have heard. Absence of sound so brain creates it own. Wonder if you are hard of hearing, would the same principle apply. Running a fan that you might not be able to hear.

Yes it does - I usually advise people who came to me because of tinnitus and the beginning of the hearing loss: try to occupy yourself with other stuff. It usually helps.
