Prof Mo
Hello everyone. I had normal hearing and woke up one morning at 21 years old with single sided deafness and immediate tinnitus in my right ear. I have had no issues with my hearing until that point and specialists at the time said it was probably a virus but they really didn't know. was not a candidate for a hearing aid as words were all muffled. my left ear is normal and I simply carried on with life as best I could. fast forward 29 years later - 4 months ago all of a sudden my tinnitus got much louder in my right ear and I started to get tinnitus in my left (normal ear). got scared and went to see the specialist and was informed that I am a candidate for a CI for my right ear. Will be getting it done in March 2022 at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto. I believe it will be a Med-El system with rondo 3 hands free. I'm a healthy individual and have no other health problems yet I am very nervous. I am really excited about the possibility of getting hearing back in my right ear and hopefully a reduction in my tinnitus as well. I am trying my best to be as fit as possible (health wise and mentally) for the surgery in a few months. My surgeon said that the rehab should go well as he sees that I will put in the work and that 'I'm a smart guy' (I'm a professor) - not sure how that is going to help me. Any advice would be much appreciated. Kylie
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted October 10, 2021 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted October 10, 2021 @right ear dream How exciting!!! My right ear spent 24 years not hearing anything after a surgery to treat Menierés Disease (it had heard before that to various degrees). It is an amazing CI ear. I wish you the best! Here is a video describing how things sounded at first after activation in case you are interested.

Prof Mo
As I learn more about the med-el system and rondo3 I'll have more questions. They recommended longer electrode flex system.
HearPeers Heroes Mary Beth Posted October 10, 2021 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted October 10, 2021 Longer electrodes provide more coverage for cochlea’s which give us better bass sounds
HearPeers Heroes Kylie Posted October 11, 2021 HearPeers Heroes Report Share Posted October 11, 2021 This is an exciting time. I am also SSD and have found great benefit to having a CI. I hear so much more now in stereo!! Also definitely reduced my tinnitus. Mary Beth and Beau
