Hello @Daniela, we are sorry to hear about that.

Have you been in touch with your audiologist and MED-EL representatives in your country? They are the best qualified to check your daughter's device and assist you.

You can find here the contact details: https://www.medel.com/clinic-finder.

Best Regards, Giulia

Hello,

Yes we are in contact with then always but unfortunately they couldn't find a solution until now. We are Romanian and we did the implant in Romania but we are living in Spain. We contact Medel in MADRID and they told me that they call me to tell me what we can do. We are still waiting from 2 days and  nothing. From our country the Audiologist told us to do a telemetry but in Spain nowadays have heard about this procedure, we called to 6 big hospital in Madrid and Malaga and nothing. So strange 🤔😓

Hello Daniela, could you please share with us your contact details (full name, email address and phone number if you want) so we can forward them to the relevant team in Spain. You can also send us a private message. In this way they can assist you directly. Thank you

Dear All,

my daughter has her Rondo 3 a week ago and we have problem with the device magnet. it is already changed to 6 but is still unstable.  If she moves it falls down. Do you  have any solution for this?

Kind regards Antoaneta Angelova

Off-the-ear processors are unfortunately notorious for falling off. There's more weight on the magnet and nothing else to hang on, as opposed to BTE devices resting on the ear.

There are some third party companies offering "nests" with clips for those processors that essentially make the processor hang in the hair and many people praise them. I am using a BTE myself, so can only recall one such site from the top of my head: https://www.ciretentionsolutions.com/ I recall there being a few similar products from other parts of the world, but not what they were called.

I hope this helps a bit.

@Antoaneta. How long has it been since the implant operation? People recover at different rates. I mention this because, even if almost impossible to see the implantation site is still swollen the magnet strength needs to be higher than when all swelling has truly subsided. Basic skin thickness is also key but you daughter's specialist will have measured that before the implant. My magnet strength is 2 but it was 4 a week after activation so I clearly had residual swelling six weeks after implantation.

I use Med-El clips and love them. However they do break and so you need to be sure to have spares. I use the clothes clip the most as it gives me a bit more freedom as I will explain. I also use the hair clip. But....

Using clips and wearing a Rondo require the wearer to change certain habits. For example, donning and doffing garments that go over the head. You have to learn to remove the Rondo during this part of the excercise. That is one of the reasons I like the clothes clip: it is long enough to dangle while I add/divest the garment.

Hats are another trial! Some work, some don't with a Rondo.

Finally, I do not know the age of your daughter but kids are extremely adaptable and clever in working out solutions so if you can solve the issue of the magnets: why does it need to be so strong, for example, your daughter will figure out the rest batter and faster than you can.

@Antoaneta

Congratulations on your daughter’s recent CI.  It is not uncommon for there to be swelling initially after surgery that takes time to heal.  This often impacts magnet retention.  My right side required a stronger magnet at first after surgery but then was able to be reduced a bit later.

In the meantime..,,

does it help if your daughter parts her hair and places the Rondo3 underneath?

Med-El sells a headband with pockets for the Rondo processors called the sports band.  That is an option too.

@Antoaneta

There is also an optional mini cover for the Rondo 3 which makes the processor a bit lighter.  Maybe your daughter’s audiologist has one you can try?  If not, they are available from Med-El .

I do not know how much lighter it makes the processor.

My early experience was similar to your daughter's.  I worked around it with headbands and weaker magnets (changing to a weaker magnet level about every 2 or 3 months as I heal internally).  I'm now doing great with my Rondos, but it took months after my surgery for this to be the case. In my case, the swelling was completely invisible and I could not feel it with my fingers. Even so, it prevented even a 5 strength magnet from working for a couple of months.

I found that headbands work a lot better with Sonnet 2, compared to Rondo 3.  You might ask your audiologist or MedEL representative if they can temporarily loan your daughter a Sonnet 2 until the swelling goes down enough for the Rondo 3 to work well.  I have both, but used the Sonnet 2 during the first two months after my surgery when the magnet would not stick and I needed a headband to hold the processor in place. I bought several headbands from Etsy here in cute colors for my Sonnet 2.  I couldn't wear my Rondo 3 during those two months, but once the swelling went down I was able to wear it regularly and now wear it every day with a 3 magnet. It only falls off when I'm doing something like taking off a sweater or brushing my hair (yes, I keep thinking that I can brush my hair while wearing the Rondos and it never works haha). I do use a clothing clip like @Andrew42described, as I got in the habit when I first started wearing it before the swelling had fully gone down. Note that in the US at least (maybe other places too, but I don't know), MedEL has a 90 day warranty for broken clips and will replace them for free if they break.

Don't forget that it takes a about 3 months for internal healing after the surgery. The body is continuing to heal even after the incision is healed and the swelling from that healing process can make the magnet not hold. If issues like this continue after 3 months or if there is pain, I would talk to my surgeon to see if any minor procedures might help (e.g. to reduce the thickness of the skin). Keep in mind that the strong magnet can cause pain or irritation (it did for me which is why I chose to use the headband with a weaker magnet--eventually the weaker magnet worked fine without a headband).
